Company History
Areas near the beautiful Bras D’Or Lakes, Cape Breton were actively quarried for marble in the late part of the 19th century. A large quarry located at Marble Mountain, Cape Breton produced and distributed white marble all over the world, into the beginning of the 20th Century. As the industrial age evolved, Nova Scotia was found to be rich in various minerals. The steel and cement industries flourished and, as a result, the marble industry was soon forgotten.
Interest in dimension stones eventually returned and, in the middle of the 20th century, a large deposit was discovered to contain a beautiful range of red and blue-grey marble. However, no technology existed to quarry the extremely hard and fragile mountain. After a few decades, diamond wire-sawing technology was invented and, coincidently, the mineral claims surrounding River Denys also became available.
Consequently, Christopher Trider and Richard Sandeson founded MacLeod Resources Ltd. in 2000. Named after previous landowners, MacLeod was incorporated to develop a marble quarry and processing facility. The company mission continues to be the creation of a dimension stone industry for Cape Breton through the strategic development of MacLeod’s brand of Canada’s Marble. Local geologists now estimate the deposit to be one billion years old, and continuously visit the quarry as new zones are revealed.
